Whenever someone asks me if I wanna go on a night out, I instantly start to feel anxious. I’m not a huge fan of drinking and I usually dislike everything that comes hand in hand with a night out. I much prefer the comfort of my own home any day of the week.
That being said, I have been stepping out of my comfort zone recently and I’ve said yes to a lot of things I would normally shy away from. It does massively help that the group of friends I have made within the Bournemouth Bloggers are incredibly supportive and lovely.
I was recently invited to attend a weekly pub quiz down at a bar called Ojo Rojo with 7 other local bloggers; Emma, Ciara, Harrison, Emma, Liz, Tara & Jessica. Honestly, I think I have found my happy middle ground when it comes to a ‘night out’! Emma and I arrived slightly early and we were warmly welcomed and given an explanation of how the evening would play out for us. I ordered a glass of rosé wine and Emma ordered a frozen strawberry margarita (which was divine) and we made our way over to our reserved table.
Once everyone else had arrived, we were given a background story on how Ojo Rojo was founded and some very interesting facts about Tequila (Did you know that it is not meant to be drank in shots but rather sipped slowly? No, me neither)! We then set about flicking through the extensive cocktail menu to decide what we should all have for our complimentary drink. There were two cocktails that took my fancy but I settled on the one called Migration (Derrumbes Michoacan Mezcal, pine liqueur, Aperol, mango juice, fresh lemon juice, almond syrup, foaming bitters, orange bitters & strawberry powder) and it was beautiful! It was definitely a favourite when the cameras made an appearance as well.
We were then provided with some snacks from their menu whilst we all had a catch up before the quiz started. We had a couple of plates of Ojo Nachos, topped with mozzarella, cheddar, guacamole, salsa, sour cream and jalapeños. Alongside this we had a selection of 5 different dips; Guacamole, Salsa, Chipotle Humous, Sweetcorn Salsa & Frijoles Blanco, the dips were provided with freshly baked bread and plain nachos. I usually just stick to a salsa or a sour cream with nachos but surprisingly the sweetcorn dip was my favourite, it was bursting with flavour and a definite recommendation from me.
Can we also just take a moment to appreciate these sweet potato fries topped with chipotle mayo. Sweet potato fries have become a huge favourite for me these past couple of months but now that I have tried them with chipotle mayo, I don’t think I can eat them with anything else!
The entire menu at Ojo Rojo is inspired by the flavours found in Mexico, however it has been given it’s own street food style twist and dining is treated like an interactive social event here.
After our food it was time for the quiz, we were passed a quiz sheet by the host and we had to come up with a team name. Harrison took the lead on this one and chose ‘lets get quizzical’ which we all thought was genius! The quiz is split into 5 rounds.
Round 1 is 10 music based questions, we would listen to 10 clips of soundtracks and be asked to write down the artists name only. This was a lot harder than it seemed and for most of the songs we were all singing along but could not work out who was singing!
Round 2 is an anagram. We were provided with 13 letters and a clue as to what we were looking for. Our clue was ‘famous person’. One team managed to get the answer within 10 seconds and we were just sat baffled for 10 minutes as to what this anagram could be. Harrison, being the genius that he is, finally figured it out!
Round 3 is 10 general knowledge based questions, these were all completely random and could be about absolutely anything.
Round 4 is a random round. This round changes every week and will be a different challenge. Ours was the tin foil challenge. We were provided with a sheet of tin foil and we could create anything we wanted, the more imaginative you were, the more points your team scored.
The final round is a guess the year round. 8 soundtracks are played and all you have to do is write down the year the song was released. This one frustrated us all so much as we managed to miss the year by one on four of the questions!
Overall the entire night was so much fun and a much better and social way to spend an evening in my opinion. We were all in fits of laughter and even though we didn’t win, we still came 5th! Ojo Rojo host this quiz weekly on a Wednesday evening and it costs £1 per person to enter and there is no limit on how big a team can be. If you are looking for a fun, relaxed evening out with friends then this is definitely worth checking out!
