Wood Oven 🔥🍕

A couple of weeks ago I was kindly invited down to The Wood Oven on Boscombe beach for a ‘pizza making & cupcake decorating evening’. Who could say no to that? Pizza AND cupcakes! I certainly couldn’t. I hold my hands up and admit that I have never actually been to The Wood Oven before this event but now that I have learnt the background behind this beautiful restaurant it will definitely be up in my top 5 as places to visit for food!

Mark, the founder of Urban Guild and the owner of Wood Oven, is one of the most inspiring people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He went travelling after University and met so many people that enjoyed offering hospitality and making people smile, so much so that when he moved back to his hometown on Bournemouth he wanted to create something unique that would give people that hospitality and happiness he had found whilst travelling, and so Urban Beach was born! Urban Beach grew over the years and now with a cafe, restaurant, bar, craft beer and farm, Urban Guild is very well established! Read Mark’s full story over on http://www.urbanguild.co.uk, you can also find out the story about why pineapples are a big part of the Urban Guild logo!

The evening started off with Mark talking us through his story and showing us lots of pictures from his travels whilst we sipped our complimentary cocktails (which were delicious by the way) and then the Head Chef James came in and gave us a tutorial on how to make a pizza base. Honestly, he made it look like the easiest task in the world, but we were all struggling! So much so that myself, Ciara & Brogan all needed a second helping of dough because we messed up so badly the first time (oops!).

We then got to decorate our pizzas with whichever toppings we liked. Mark had them all set out on a table, clearly labelled and the best part? All of the ingredients are locally sourced where possible! I went for mozzarella cheese, fresh salmon, baby tomatoes and a bit of basil. Sounds gross right? Wrong! It tasted SO good!

Downstairs in the kitchen was where we got to see the magic happen, the HUGE wood oven (again, locally bought). This oven was immense, we could fit all of our pizzas in at once and they only took about 3 minutes to cook in total. We tasted each others pizza and anonymously voted for our top 3. The 3 winning pizzas won a spot on Wood Ovens menu for a 2 week slot each, which is amazing and it made for a very fun (and yummy) evening!

In the midst of all the pizza making fun, we also got to decorate our own cupcakes with this gorgeous white chocolate icing! Those cupcakes went down all too well.❤️

All in all, it was a fabulously organised evening and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The pizza was incredible and so freshly made and I will definitely be making a trip back to Wood Oven in the future!

Thank you to Mark and the team and I hope to see you all again very soon!

  1. I love the idea that all the ingredients are locally sourced. It’s great when a restaurant supports the local businesses in their area. Also, the fact that the owner traveled can be seen in the quality of the food.
