‘We are marching because those words deserve to be run over. Steam rolled. Flattened to dust. We are marching in our Converse and our candy-colored flip-flops and our kitten heels, too. Our legs are moving, our arms are swinging, our mouths are set in lines so straight and sharp you could cut yourself on them.’

Summary: Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with sexist dress codes. Fed up with gross comments from guys during class. Fed up with her high school teachers who let it happen! But most of all, Viv is fed up with always following the rules. Viv’s mum has a punk rock Riot Grrrl, inspiring Viv to create MOXIE, a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She’s just blowing off steam, but other girls respond and begin to spread the MOXIE message: MOXIE GIRLS FIGHT BACK! And before Viv knows it, she has started a girl revolution.
This book is incredibly important and everybody needs to read this! Moxie highlights the behaviour women have to face every single day and it proves that even one voice speaking up for what they believe in can change things for the better.
Seth is a character we meet during Viv’s journey and he is one of the best male characters I have ever come across in a YA book. He is completely understanding of Viv and her motion to want to change things and he supports everything she does. He may slip up and say the wrong thing occasionally but he learns from his mistakes.
This book is all about feminism and the power that comes with that. It’s so nice to see all the different cliques in school coming together to fight for something they believe in.
It’s an incredible journey and it needs to be talked about more! We can all learn a lot from this book and I would recommend it to EVERYBODY!
